Software House vs Freelancer in Pakistan: Which Should You Hire?

By the AlimcoSoft team, Islamabad

Pakistan has plenty of skilled freelancers and plenty of software houses. Neither is always the right choice. The answer depends on the size of the job, how much of it you can manage yourself, and how long the software needs to last.

We run a software house, so we have a side here. A freelancer really is the better choice for some jobs, and this guide says which ones.

When a freelancer is the better choice

A good freelancer is often the right hire when the work is small and clearly defined, and you can judge the result yourself.

  • A simple website or landing page
  • A single feature added to an existing product
  • A short design job
  • A fixed task with a clear finish
  • Extra hands for a technical team you already run

When a software house is the better choice

A real product needs several skills at once: design, frontend, backend, mobile, testing and deployment. One person rarely covers all of them well. A software house brings those people together and someone is responsible for how they work.

  • A product with both a mobile app and a backend
  • A system your business will depend on every day
  • Work involving payments, health or other sensitive data
  • Projects that need several people working at once
  • Software that needs support for years

The cost difference is not only the hourly rate

A freelancer usually costs less per hour because there is less overhead. But you become the project manager. You write the requirements, check the work, coordinate the design and development, and test everything. If you have no technical background, that work is hard to do well and easy to underestimate.

With a software house you pay more per hour and much of that management is included. Compare the full cost of finishing the project, not the rate.

The biggest risk is one person leaving

If a freelancer takes a full-time job, falls ill or loses interest, your project stops. If the code has no documentation, the next developer may need weeks to understand it.

A software house spreads that risk across a team, so a person leaving does not end the project. That matters most for software you plan to run for years.

Speed and quality checks

A team can work on design, backend and mobile at the same time, while one person has to do them in order. A team also gives you code review, which catches problems before users do.

A freelancer can still be faster on small work, because there are no meetings and no handovers.

How to decide

Ask three questions. Can you describe the whole job on one page? Can you check the work yourself? Would it be fine if the person disappeared next month? If you answered yes to all three, hire a freelancer. If not, talk to a software house.

Whichever you choose, keep the code in your own repository and keep the domain and hosting accounts in your own name.

Frequently asked questions

Is a software house more expensive than a freelancer?
Usually per hour, yes. For a larger project the total can be closer than it looks, because the software house covers project management, testing and deployment.
Can a freelancer build a full mobile app?
Yes, if the app is simple and the freelancer is strong across mobile and backend work. Apps with payments, real-time features or admin panels usually need more than one person.
Can I start with a freelancer and move to a software house later?
Yes. Keep the code in your own repository and ask for documentation from the start, so the handover is easier.
